Description

Foxes were believed to be the messengers of Inari, the Shinto god of rice, fertility and prosperity. People would pray to Inari for a good harvest and success in many aspects of their lives. Beneath an autumn moon a fox, disguised as an old woman, inspects a trap baited with a fish. There is a stack of harvested rice behind her, along with pampas grass, one of the Seven Flowers of Autumn, a group of plants traditionally associated with the season.
