Description
This painting, created by Nicolas Poussin around 1630, depicts the Roman gods Mars and Venus. The painting shows Mars, the god of war, asleep and disarmed, while Venus, the goddess of love, looks on. The painting is done in oil on canvas and measures 2137 x 1549 mm. It is part of the collection at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and is owned by the Augustus Hemenway Fund and Arthur William Wheelwright Fund. The painting is a beautiful example of Poussin’s skill in depicting classical mythology and his use of color and composition to create a sense of harmony and balance.
