Description
Self-Portrait with a Bottle of Wine is a painting by Edvard Munch, created in Weimar in 1906. The painting depicts the artist sitting alone at a table with a bottle of wine, a glass, and a plate. The hunched figure and weak folded hands express utter helplessness. The sloping lines create a strong depth perspective in the picture, with the head in the center where all the lines meet. The use of colors creates a tense and claustrophobic atmosphere, with a strong red color behind the artist’s head creating a movement forward and drawing attention to the head. Two figures resembling waiters are standing back-to-back in the background, pictured as having a shared body and almost seeming to have grown out of Munch’s own body. The two heads, each looking in different directions, can be interpreted as metaphors for opposing forces in the artist’s soul
