Description

The Negro Scipio is an oil painting on canvas created by Paul Cézanne between 1866 and 1868. The painting measures 86 cm in width and 107 cm in height. It is currently located in the collection of João Musa. The painting depicts a man, likely of African descent, dressed in a red tunic and holding a spear. The figure is set against a dark background, with minimal detail in the surrounding space. The painting is an example of Cézanne’s early work, which was heavily influenced by the Realist movement. The painting was donated to the collection by Henryk Spitzman-Jordan, Drault Emanny, Pedro Luiz Correia e Castro, and Rui de Almeida in 1950.
