Description
Rinaldo and Armida is a painting by French artist Nicolas Poussin, created around 1630. The painting is inspired by Torquato Tasso’s epic poem La Gerusalemme Liberata, which tells the story of the First Crusade and the struggles between Christians and Saracens. The painting depicts the moment when Armida, a Saracen sorceress, falls in love with Rinaldo, a Christian crusader, after attempting to kill him. Poussin portrays the exact moment when Armida’s hatred turns into undying passion. The painting is an allegory of the human struggle between Reason and Concupiscence, according to Anthony Blunt. The painting is currently located at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London.
